Major Robert H. Temple
Future Temple residents began to settle along the Georgia Pacific Railroad as it was being built between Atlanta and Birmingham. In 1882, they founded Temple and named the town for Major Robert H. Temple, a Civil War veteran and the chief engineer of the railroad. The next year, Temple earned its charter. www.paywatches.net
The First School Bus
Temple became known statewide because of the Temple Model School which opened in 1904. The school became a model for other schools in its agricultural and homemaking programs and its horse-drawn transportation system. Temple had the Nations 1st School Bus.
Many children from were transported to the Temple School in these mule drawn coverd wagons. Others students would obtain room and board with some local families in order to attend the Temple School.
